                                                    AC Delco History

AC Delco has been committed to producing quality parts for more than 100 years.

The AC Delco story actually began in 1901 when Brothers Frank and Perry Remy formed the Remy Electric Company and begin to manufacture dynamos and magnets. In 1908 the French bicyclist Albert Champion (A.C.) began manufacturing Champion spark plugs. Shortly thereafter the Champion Ignition Company entered into a partnership with the Buick Motor Company. This was the birth of the AC Spark Plug Company which was the beginning of the long affiliation with the company that was to become General Motors several years later.

The AC Spark Plug became very popular with the American public as they were just beginning to experience the joy and convenience of automotive travel. In 1927 the AC Spark Plug made history as they were the spark plug of choice for the aviator Charles Lindbergh as he completed the first transatlantic flight.  Mr. Lindbergh’s success influenced another famous aviator Amelia Earhart to use the AC Spark Plugs for her transatlantic flight as well.

In 1916 the United Motors Corporation (UMC) was developed to consolidate many of the automotive accessory manufacturers to help reduce duplication of product and effort to sell and service parts. One of the manufacturers affected was Dayton Engineering Laboratories Co or Delco which became the United Delco Division.

In 1926 The Remy Electric Company merges with Dayton Engineering Labs, Co. (Delco) and forms the Delco Remy Corp.

In 1971 United Motor Services changed its name to the United Delco Division.

After numerous reorganizations and name changes during several decades the AC Spark Plug Sales Division and United Delco division merged together in 1974 to form the AC Delco division. AC Delco became the General Motors Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Brand. They have continually held a clear advantage over their competition because of their commitment to engineering and technology while offering superior parts for new vehicles.

In 1995 AC Delco created a new logo to focus consumer attention on one unified brand image for its numerous product lines.

In 2002 AC Delco DDG (Dedicated Distribution Group) made a dramatic change in their business plan. They reduced the amount of national distributors from 2,500 to 100.

With more than 100 years of dedicated commitment to quality products and innovative thinking AC Delco has continued to be a leader in the automotive parts and service industry. AC Delco has played an integral part in automotive history providing more than 100,000 products and thousands of service centers to automobile owners in more than 100 countries.

As of this writing the remarkable AC Delco story continues into the future.
